VCA have just consigned a particularly special David Hockney — Van Gogh Chair (Black). The work is a B.A.T. (Bon à Tirer) impression, the artist-approved proof for the final edition of just 35, making it considerably rarer than a standard edition.

The provenance is exceptional, coming from the collection of Maurice Payne, the printer who collaborated with Hockney on this series and also worked with artists including Jasper Johns and Jim Dine.
There is also a strong auction benchmark, with another Van Gogh Chair selling for $239,400 at Sotheby’s.
